Dim the lights.

The warmup act has taken its leave and it’s time for the star of the spring sports show, the postseason, to take center stage.

While there were still some games to be played when this edition went to press, we’re getting a pretty good idea of who will make the playoffs and where they might be seeded.

And while the baseball, softball, lacrosse and tennis postseason is just days away, outdoor track’s biggest events are underway with the state meet slated for this coming weekend.

The best is yet to come and here’s a look at what to expect:

Scarborough’s girls tallied 127 points and won the SMAA championship meet last Friday in Kennebunk. Junior Emerson Flaker continued to dazzle, winning the 100 (12.29 seconds) and 400 (57.62), then she finished the sprint sweep with a time of 25.42 in the 200, the best time in the state this year. Flaker also anchored the winning 1,600 relay (which had a top time of 4 minutes, 6.56 seconds).

“It’s good to get used to the nerves and having some competition,” Flaker said. “Next week (at states), there will be lots of competition and it’s going to be exciting.”

Laurel Driscoll was first in the mile (4:59.99). Isabella Harmon won the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and the pole vault (10-7).

In the boys’ meet, won by South Portland with 129 points, Scarborough was sixth with 55. The Red Storm won the 4×800 relay (8:07.92).

The Class A state meet is Saturday at Thornton Academy in Saco.

Tennis

Scarborough’s boys’ tennis team finished the regular season with a record of 9-3. The Red Storm project to be in the No. 5 spot in Class A South and will take part in the quarterfinals next week, likely at No. 4 Gorham.

Scarborough’s girls were 7-4 entering Tuesday’s finale versus reigning regional champion Falmouth. The Red Storm were ranked eighth in Class A South at press time and will host a preliminary round match Friday.

Scarborough’s baseball team capped a superb 15-1 regular season, its best since 1995, with wins last week over visiting Kennebunk (5-3) and host Portland (12-0, in five-innings). Against the Rams, Erik Swenson struck out 10 and earned the win, Zak Sanders closed it out and scored two runs and Cam Wellman had two RBI. In the win over the Bulldogs, Ryan Shugars threw a one-hitter over four innings, Lew Moynihan hit an inside-the-park home run, Patrick McCue drove in three runs and Tyler Archambault had two hits and scored twice.

The Red Storm finished first in the Class A South Heal Points standings and will host a quarterfinal round playoff game next Thursday against a foe to be determined.

“I think people definitely thought that we would be in the mix, in the middle of the pack, but I don’t think anyone thought we would be where we are,” said Swenson, the staff ace, who has verbally committed to the University of Maine. “I credit it to my coaches. We have a great team, a strong team.”

“Last year, we were all young and that’s part of the reason we fell short last year (getting upset by Marshwood in the quarterfinals),” said Archambault. “This year, we’re all older. We’ve been playing together since we were 10-years-old. We’ve all grown together. It took last year to all grow together at the varsity level. This year, we’re all more mature. Bigger, stronger and mentally more mature, as well.”

Scarborough’s softball team finished the regular season in style, on a five-game win streak, capped by victories last week over visiting Kennebunk (7-2) and Marshwood (5-3). Against the Rams, Meghan Robinson went the distance, allowing just one earned run. Gabby Pelletier, Alana Sawyer and Taylor Swalla all had two hits to pace the offense. In the win over the Hawks, Samantha Cote drove in two and Laine Niles had two hits.

The Red Storm (11-5) project to be the No. 6 seed in Class A South and will host a preliminary round game next Tuesday against a to be determined foe.

Boys’ lacrosse

Scarborough’s boys’ lacrosse team was 8-5 and up to fifth in the Class A state Heals after wins at Massabesic (15-8) and at home over Deering (7-4). Against the Mustangs, Olin Pedersen scored four goals and Liam Sellinger added three. Pedersen scored four times in the win over the Rams, Sellinger finished with two goals and goalie Ben Kerbel made 16 saves.

“This is pretty awesome,” said Kerbel. “It’s huge for us. We really wanted to win this game. We did a lot of preparation and it paid off. Coach (Zac Barrett) hammered into us that this would decide where we’d play in the playoffs. They’re a good team and they were hot.”

“We knew we had to win it,” Pedersen said. “It was important to win on Senior Night. They were worth a lot of Heal Points. This was a huge win. Great effort, from the goaltending to the defense to attack.”

“I’m thrilled with the guys doing that this time of year and finishing the season the way we’d hoped,” added Barrett.

The Red Storm, who were 0-3 to start the season before winning eight of 10 games, closed at Marshwood Thursday, then should host at least one playoff round.

“This will keep us up driving into the playoffs,” Kerbel said. “We have athleticism. We just have to clean it up and give it 110 (percent) every play. That’s our biggest thing.”

“We’ve gotten better and we’re showing everyone we’re a challenge no matter who we’re playing,” Pedersen said. “We’ve really come together.”

“There’s no pressure,” added Barrett. “We have momentum going into the playoffs. I don’t know what we’re capable of, but it’s exciting to figure it out. Our goal is to face one of the top three teams in a semifinal and put it all on the table.”

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Scarborough was 6-7 after a 10-9 win at Cape Elizabeth and a 15-1 setback at three-time reigning Class A champion Kennebunk. In the victory, Avery Larsen scored four goals, including the winner with 5.4 seconds remaining. Kate Mokriski scored three goals, including the tying tally. Grace Carlista had the lone goal versus the Rams.

The Red Storm were 13th in Class A heading into Thursday’s regular season finale, at home versus Noble.
