BASEBALL

Tyler Dearden was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Portland Sea Dogs earned their second straight win, beating the Somerset Patriots, 8-3, on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.

Dearden hit the first of his two doubles in the second inning, driving in a run that gave the Sea Dogs a 3-1 lead. Nathan Hickey led off the second with a solo homer to tie the game, and Alex Binelas made it 2-1 with an RBI single.

Dearden added an RBI double in the fifth.

Matthew Lugo and Nick Yorke each contributed an RBI double.

Hunter Dobbins improved to 5-5 with Portland, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

COLLEGES

FIELD HOCKEY: Tereza Holubcova and Mallory Mackesy both scored two goals and set up another, leading Maine to a 5-3 win over Ohio in Orono.

Saylor Kuefler also scored for the Black Bears (2-2), who jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 18 minutes.

Katelyn Whittle, Pauline Hartlied and Meela Koop scored for Ohio (1-2).

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Abbey Thornton scored as Maine played to a 1-1 tie with Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Grace O’Hara scored for Sacred Heart (0-3-2). Kira Kutzinski made two saves for Maine (3-0-3).

• Eliza Roy scored in each half as Southern Maine (2-0) rolled to a 6-0 win over St. Joseph’s (0-2) in Gorham.

Ashley Sabatino opened the scoring in the eighth minute. USM broke the game open in the second half with the help of goals by Julia McKenna, Cami Blatchford and Aly Veilleux.

MEN’S SOCCER: Joseph Perron scored in the first half and Liam Foley made six saves as St. Joseph’s (0-1-1) played to a 1-1 draw with Wheaton (0-0-1) in Standish.

Wheaton’s Robert Lloyd tied the game with about 10 minutes remaining.

• Harlan Lundgren scored the tying goal with less than five minutes remaining as the University of New England (0-1-1) salvaged a 1-1 draw with Thomas (0-1-1) in Waterville.

Craig Coventry opened the scoring for Thomas midway through the second half.

FOOTBALL: Former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei got off to a fast start for his new team, throwing three touchdown passes and running for two scores to lead No. 18 Oregon State to a 42-17 victory at San Jose State.

BASKETBALL

WORLD CUP: The U.S. is going to the Paris Olympics next summer. Lithuania made sure that was the only good development for the Americans on Sunday night when it pulled off a World Cup stunner.

Vaidas Kariniauskas scored 15 points, Mindaugas Kuzminskas added 14, and Lithuania beat the U.S. 110-104 in a second-round game at Manila, Philippines.

The loss came on a night when the Americans officially clinched a berth in the Paris Games. The U.S. was already assured of advancing to the quarterfinals and will play Italy on Tuesday.

WNBA: Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot had double-doubles and sparked a 22-0 run in the fourth quarter to lead the New York Liberty to their sixth straight victory, 86-69 at Chicago.

Stewart finished with 26 points, 14 rebounds and five assists for her 19th double-double of the season for the Liberty (30-7). Vandersloot pitched in with 20 points, 10 assists, six steals and five rebounds against her former team.

• Kelsey Mitchell and NaLyssa Smith each scored 30 points as the Indiana Fever beat Dallas 97-84 in overtime, preventing the host Wings from clinching the fourth seed in the playoffs.

• Kayla McBride scored 23 points, Napheesa Collier and Dorka Juhász added double-doubles, and the Minnesota Lynx clinched a spot in the playoffs by handing visiting Phoenix its eighth straight los, 86-73.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Alex Palou clinched his second IndyCar championship for Chip Ganassi Racing with a dominant run at Portland (Oregon) International Raceway.

Palou won for the fifth time this season to lock up the title with one weekend remaining in the 17-race schedule. He led 69 of the 110 laps to score a decisive victory over runner-up Felix Rosenqvist, who finished 5.4353 seconds back. Scott Dixon was third.

FORMULA ONE: Runaway points leader Max Verstappen secured a record 10th straight win with victory at the Italian Grand Prix, leading Red Bull’s 1-2 finish on Ferrari’s home track.

Verstappen beat teammate Sergio Pérez by 6.064 seconds. Carlos Sainz Jr. was third, 11.193 behind Verstappen and less than two tenths of a second ahead of Charles Leclerc as the two Ferrari drivers battled for the final spot on the podium.

GOLF

LPGA: Teenager Chanettee Wannasaen played a five-hole stretch in 6 under early in the final round and closed with a near-flawless 9-under 63 for a four-stroke victory at the Portland Classic in Oregon, becoming the first Monday qualifier to win on the LPGA Tour since 2015.

Wannasaen arrived at Portland ranked 367th and having missed nine straight cuts in her rookie season. The 19-year-old from Thailand put together four stellar rounds in the 60s and shattered the tournament scoring record by five strokes with a 26-under 262 total.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Swedish rookie Ludvig Aberg surged to a two-shot win at the European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

Aberg stunned leader Matt Fitzpatrick by reeling off four straight birdies from Nos. 14 to 17. He carded a 6-under 64 for a 19-under total of 261. Fitzpatrick faded to a tie for third, three shots back.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Declan Rice scored his first Arsenal goal deep into injury time and Gabriel Jesus added another one past the 100th minute mark to give Arsenal a 3-1 win over Manchester United.

• Odsonne Edouard scored twice for Crystal Palace in its 3-2 win over Wolverhampton, helping his team earn a second victory in the Premier League this season.

• Mohamed Salah put aside intense speculation about his future by scoring again for Liverpool in its dominant 3-0 win over Aston Villa that made it three straight victories for Jürgen Klopp’s team.

FRANCE: Kylian Mbappé scored two more goals as Paris Saint-Germain won 4-1 at struggling Lyon.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: German rider Lennard Kämna won the hilly ninth stage while American Sepp Kuss held on to the overall lead.

Kämna separated from a breakaway group on the final ascent to win the 115-mile ride from Cartagena to Collado de la Cruz de Caravaca in southeastern Spain. Matteo Sobrero crossed 13 seconds behind, with the next riders finishing a minute later.
