Harold A. Clough

SCARBOROUGH – Harold A. Clough, 95, of Scarborough, passed away suddenly on July 22, 2023. At his request, his body was donated to UNE. Funeral and Masonic services will be held at a later date.

Harold was born on May 17, 1928 in Lebanon, the son of Arthur V. and Ruth E. (Libby) Clough. He graduated valedictorian, from Kennebunkport H.S.

Harold held several positions during his career. He enjoyed every one of them and was highly respected for his strong work ethics and management skills. He served as general manager at Bailey Auto Supply and United Auto Parts. He worked for ITT Automotive Distributers as Northeast Regional Manager, then moved to New Jersey to become Director of Operations. On his return to Maine, he worked as Director of Retail Stores for Emery-Waterhouse Company. Then he worked for NAPA as a classification specialist. He worked for McKenney’s Service Center.

In his retirement, he supported his community by serving two terms in the House of Representatives for Scarborough from 1998 to 2006. Harold was a member of Blue Point Congregational Church where he served on the vestry. He enjoyed volunteering at the church suppers. Harold was very active in freemasonry throughout his life. He was initiated in Cornerstone Lodge in 1960. He also joined Ancient Landmark Lodge in 1974. He was also a member of Triangle Lodge # 1. He served as Worshipful Master at both Ancient Landmark and Triangle Lodge. He was Past High Priest of Mt. Sinai/ Greenleaf. He also was High Priest of Joppa Chapter. He was Past Illustrious Master of Portland Council #4. He served as Past Commander of Portland/St. Albans Knight Templar. He also was Sword Bearer and Junior Warden at Commandery Knight Templar. He received his 60 year service star in 2019. He was a member of the Allied Masonic Degrees. He was Grand Imperial Council of the Red Cross of Constantine where he served as Illustrious Past Grand Sovereign, Maine Conclave #1 and Treasurer. He was a member of ROSICRUCIAN’S. He was Thrice Illustrious Masters: Past President. He was Past Eminent Prior and long time Registrar of KYCH: Pine Tree Priory #65. He was a member of Dirigo York Rite College and Knight Masons of Maine: Pine Tree Council. He was Knight Priest and Registrar of Cross and Crown Tabernacle No. L111. He was Past District Deputy Grand Master 17th District. He was a member of Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. He was coronated a Sovereign Grand Inspector General 33rd degree. He was Officer of Bodies in Valley of Portland, including Past Sovereign Prince of the Princes of Jerusalem. He was Thrice Potent Master of Yates Lodge of Perfection. He was a member of the Dunlap Chapter Rose Croix, Maine Consistory, Kora Temple, Greater Portland Shrine Club and York County Shrine Club. He was a member of Portland Valley of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. A special thanks to Ken Caldwell and Jody Hersey for their help.

Harold was happiest when he was doing anything constructive. His grandfather, father and son were general contractors and Harold enjoyed building furniture, sheds as well as turning the basement into a family room. He tackled many projects around the house over the years and helped his family with many of their projects,

He also enjoyed riding his BMW motorcycle with family and friends. He bought, fixed up and sold motorcycles. He and Judy traveled to Las Vegas, Nev.; Bermuda, England and the Virgin Islands during their life. In later years, at 90, he got a bicycle which he enjoyed. He enjoyed walking with his friend Dee, talking to Bob and the rest of the neighbors on his daily walks. He would walk a couple of miles a day through his extensive neighborhood and pretty much knew everyone. He was a family man who loved spending time with his loved ones.

Harold was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Harding; his parents; three brothers, Norman, Vernor and Lewis Clough and sister-in-law, Earlene.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Judith (Hudson) Clough; his children, Dawn (Peter) Wentworth, Mark (Kris) Clough and Cynthia (Scott) Dongo and stepdaughter, Cathy (Stephen) Vorpagel; sister-in-law, Mary Clough; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He will be sadly missed by his family. He set a great example, not only for his children, but the many who knew him and the many he mentored throughout his life.
