PORTLAND – Constance Olive Josslyn Cushman of Portland died on Sept. 16, 2022, two days after her 99th birthday. Connie was the third of five daughters born to Clarise H. Seiders and Leon C. Josslyn of Portland.
A 1941 graduate of Deering High School, Connie worked in accounting at Maine Medical Center and for the medical practice of Drs. McCain, Bennet and Knowles.
In 1981, she married Richard Cushman of Portland in a ceremony on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The couple loved Maui, their official residence, but spent summers at their home in Sebasco Estates, Maine. With the passing of her husband, Connie returned to Portland and resided at the Portland House for many years. She was grateful for the company and the support of the staff and her friends there.
Connie was a longtime member of the Woodfords Congregational Church and was active with the Order of the Rainbow Girls, with whom she was a past Worthy Advisor. She was also a member of the Zonta Club and the Woodfords Club.
While Connie had no children of her own, she was beloved by the 13 sons and daughters of her four sisters. Aunt Connie was the fun, mischievous aunt who was most likely to play or go on outings. She loved to laugh. She also loved travel, and Connie and her husband traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. Those trips provided wonderful memories that Connie loved to share and reminiscence about with visitors. She was also an avid golfer.
In addition to her husband, Connie was predeceased by her four sisters, Elizabeth Taylor, Phyllis Winslow, Margaret Emmons, and J. Joanne Meade; as well as by her niece, Maine artist Holly Meade.
She is survived by 12 nieces and nephews, Allan Taylor, Jocelyn Barbour, Joanne Taylor, Lisa Skutnik, Anne Tarbox, Robert Winslow, Jeffrey Meade, Andrea Meade Lawson, Nancy Emmons, Janet Emmons, Kenneth Emmons, Douglas Emmons; and many great-nieces and nephews.
Connie’s life will be celebrated at an interment at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland, Friday, May 5 at 1 p.m.
