Joan R. Dennison

SOUTH PORTLAND – Joan R. Dennison, 92, of South Portland passed away on April 1, 2023.

She was born May 27, 1930 in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of James and May Beane. Upon the death of her mother, Joan became the foster child of Mrs. Madeleine Bartlett.

She graduated from Kennebunk High School and Northeast Business College. In 1954, she married Keith F. Dennison, Jr. of South Portland. They moved to Boston, Mass. where Keith earned a master’s degree in Pharmacology. Upon his father’s death, they returned to South Portland where Joan was the ever-present smiling face and pharmacist’s mate at Dennison’s Pharmacy for many years.

With Keith’s passing, she moved to the Betsy Ross House where she spent many years enjoying “her dorm life.” An avid gardener, she contributed dozens of perennials to the gardens there. Joan was a long-time member and past-president of the Osewantha Garden Club. She and Keith were members of the First Congregational Church for

more than 50 years.

Joan leaves a daughter, Kimberley Ferrell; grandson, Christopher Ferrell, his wife Sarah; and great-grandchildren James and Morgan; loving sister-in-law, Deborah Gregory and her husband Michael; nephew, Michael Gregory, Jr, his wife Melinda and their children Michael III and Brittany; niece, Melissa Kane, her husband Michael and their children Kevin, Kathryn, and Caroline; nephew, Matthew Gregory; and special family friend, Hugo Gasc.

Services and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when family can gather.
