Darlene P. Caseiro

SCARBOROUGH – Darlene P. Caseiro, 90, of Tenney Lane, died peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at home with her loving family by her side.

Darlene was born in Wichita, Kan. on July 11, 1932, the daughter of the late Forest and Marie (Self) Perkins. She graduated from Burlington High School in New Jersey in 1950, then earned her BA from Douglass College in 1954. Her proudest achievement was receiving a Ford Foundation scholarship to Yale University, where she received her Master’s Degree in Education in 1955.

Darlene started her teaching career in Freehold, N.J. and Burlington Township High School in Burlington, N.J. In 1974, after moving the family to Maine, she began a twenty-year career teaching Spanish at Deering High School, retiring in 1994. After her retirement, she taught part-time at St. Joseph’s College for another eight years.

In her spare time, Darlene loved to play bridge and tennis, enjoyed quilting, reading biographies and watching the Boston Red Sox. She was also a true Tom Brady fan. She spent many hours walking the beach at Pine Point. Most notably, Darlene was an avid learner, always reading and expanding her knowledge.

She was a communicant of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister. She regularly served communion to the residents of the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough. She possessed a strong faith since she was a young girl and was a devout Catholic.

She was an active member of the Foreign Language Teachers Association and the Maine Teachers Association.

Her greatest love was her family and any time spent with them. Her passion was teaching foreign language to students of all ages. Darlene was kind, generous, caring, and loved to laugh and talk politics. She will long be remembered as a thoughtful and determined woman with a curious mind.

Darlene was predeceased by a daughter, Terri Caseiro; a brother, Tom Gorman. She is survived by a son, Chris Caseiro and his wife Kathy Mullen of Scarborough; two daughters, Lisa McCrillis of Scarborough, MaryBeth Caseiro and her husband Mark Burke of Vermont; seven grandchildren, John (wife Nicole), Nicholas (partner Jess), Matt (wife Danielle), Katie, Kevin, Joshua, and Olivia; four great-grandchildren, Henry, Maddie, Finn, and Margot; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Gorman; nieces, Stephanie and Lori and her family; and special friends, Joan, Jackie and Jan.

An hour of visitation celebrating Darlene’s life will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022 at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, ME. A funeral service will follow at the Chapel at 11 a.m. with burial at Black Point Cemetery, Scarborough, ME.
