A 65-year-old man from Poland was hospitalized with serious injuries after his motorcycle struck a car in Standish on Saturday afternoon, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Ralph Belmont was riding a 1976 BMW motorcycle northbound on Pequawket Trail around 4:30 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 2014 Ford Focus driven by Isabel Dawson, 19, of Portland, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Dawson was making a left turn into a driveway when Belmont tried to pass on the left and struck the driver’s side front fender of her vehicle. Belmont, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle.
Belmont suffered “serious injuries” and was taken by Standish EMS to Maine Medical Center in Portland. His condition was not available Saturday night. Dawson suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released. Both vehicles had serious damage.
The sheriff’s office said alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. The accident happened on Pequawket Trail – which is also Route 113 – between the Steep Falls section of Standish and East Baldwin.
