Public safety personnel in Standish responded Friday afternoon to a rupture that caused an estimated 100 gallons of heating oil to spill out of its tank into the basement of a home on Oak Ridge Drive.

The spill was reported just before 5 p.m., said Lt. Steve Price of the Standish Public Safety Department. A crew responded and was able to plug the leak to prevent any additional oil from spilling.

A crew from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection led the effort to remove the oil and clean the basement, Price said.

While he was not certain whether the home’s residents were displaced as a result of the spill, Price said fumes from such a spill likely would require any occupants to vacate temporarily.

“That stuff smells really bad for a really long time,” he said.
