Police on Thursday arrested a New York City man in Portland and charged him with trafficking in heroin.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Portland police’s Crime Reduction Unit raided a room at the Clarion Hotel on Congress Street at 6 p.m.

Police arrested Jomo K. Cunningham, 22, of Brooklyn, New York, and seized 60 grams of heroin – worth about $8,400 – as well as digital scales, packing material and cash, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Cunningham is being held on $25,000 bail at the Cumberland County Jail.

Police had been investigating heroin trafficking in Greater Portland for the past two months leading to Thursday’s arrest. Police say more arrests are expected.

Cunningham is the fourth New Yorker arrested on heroin trafficking charges in Maine in the past week. Two men were arrested in Kennebunk after they were pulled over for speeding on the Maine Turnpike with 152 grams of heroin in their car and another New York man was charged with selling heroin from an apartment in Gardiner.
