One person died in a crash on Route 27 in Boothbay around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident on Route 27, also known as Wiscasset Road, after receiving several calls reporting a crash. Because the initial reports indicated that the driver had sustained injuries, members of the Boothbay Fire Department and Boothbay Region Ambulance Service also responded.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 73-year-old man, was dead by the time authorities arrived. He was wearing a seat belt.

The vehicle, a 2007 Jeep SUV, was traveling south on Route 27 when it left the road, went into a ditch and hit a utility pole. The vehicle sustained significant damage to its front end and driver’s side.

Route 27 was closed for about 90 minutes while deputies investigated the crash. The state medical examiner’s office is trying to determine if the driver suffered a medical emergency before the crash.

The name of the driver has not been released, pending notification of his family out of state.

Utility crews are expected to be working in the area for several more hours to replace the pole and restore any lost services.
