A federal police officer from Calais has been charged with possessing child pornography.

Maine State Police said Friday that Roy Wise, 49, a former Calais police officer, was arrested Thursday night at his home at 63 Spring St. by the State Police Computer Crimes Task Force.

Wise is a federal officer assigned to the Cutler Naval Facility in Washington County, the police statement said.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service alerted state police to the possibility Wise was viewing child pornography on his work computer as well as his home computer, the release said.

Wise is charged with one count of possessing sexually explicit material of someone younger than 12.

He was taken to Washington County Jail.

The naval facility is home to a very-low-frequency transmitter used by the Navy to communicate with submarines.
