Woman’s club earns honor

The Westbrook Woman’s Club received national recognition on Oct. 9 from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in the area of education at the annual fall convention in Waterville.

The club raises money through its yearly lobster roll luncheon to provide college scholarships to Westbrook High School seniors. Last year, the club made and sold more than 900 lobster rolls.

Those attending the conference from Westbrook were woman’s club president Norma Manning, GFWC Maine president-elect Mary Libby, Roberta Morrill, Patricia Currier, Betty Young, Marion Sturtevant and Evelyn Meserve.

Historians to hear Galluzzo

Donna Galluzzo, a Westbrook native, will speak about the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, where she is executive director, when the Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The meeting is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Dancers raise money for breast cancer

Students of Drouin Dance Center, 90 Bridge St., in Westbrook last week took part in “Pink Week,” wearing pink attire to their dance classes and donated to the American Cancer Society.

They raised $286 during the week.

Students ages 1 through adult wore their favorite pink dance attire, accented with tutus, hair bands and pink ribbons, in support of those who have fought breast cancer.

Drouin Dance Center students take part in many community-service oriented projects throughout the year. This past Summer, students raised more than $250 taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Next service projects are food collections for the Westbrook Food Pantry and holiday gift donations for the Opportunity Alliance.

“I am so proud of our students. They got in the pink spirit and had some great outfits,” said Danielle J. Drouin, owner-director of the dance center. “We even had parents and grandparents in the waiting room wearing head-to-toe pink. Their generosity and support of such an important cause is inspiring. Any time we reach out to the community to help or donate, our students and families step right up to help.”

Button club seeks members

The Casco Bay Button Club meets 6-8 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month at St. Anthony’s Church on Brown Street in Westbrook.

Mayors across the United States are recognizing a growing movement that is dedicated to encouraging individuals and organizations to “go the extra mile” in service and volunteerism. On Nov.? 1, 500 mayors are expected to declare “Extra Mile Day.”

Westbrook Mayor Colleen Hilton ?and the city have ?join?ed? the list.

?According to a press release, ?Extra Mile Day celebrates individuals and organizations that have chosen to create positive change in their communities by going the extra mile.

Trick-or-treaters dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” during last Friday’s crowded Halloween on Main Street event.  The Westbrook/Gorham Community Chamber, which has organized the event since the late 1990s, is looking for another organization to take over the popular Halloween celebration next year.
