How can anyone honestly think Freeport is better off in a RSU? The state-mandated plan has been doomed to fail since its inception and that’s why so many other RSUs have dissolved, too. It’s not personal or because we do not like our neighbors in Pownal and Durham. We gave it a try and for many well-documented reasons and a contentious history of differences with these two towns, Freeport needs to pull out and regain local control so that we can move forward.

I like what Alan Tracy said in last week’s letters, “A vote for withdrawal is voting for Freeport’s future and continued ascent to be among the best places to live in Maine.” This is what we have to remember, not the short-term pains of separation. I’ve heard some parents of current students say withdrawal will not benefit “their kids” and that may be true today, meaningful change is rarely quick or easy, but as a community we have to think of Freeport’s future and generations to come. Who knows, our town and schools may reap the benefits of being on our own sooner than later if we all get behind it now.

Voting yes is a vote of confidence in our town and the future of our children’s education. We need high quality, not quantity in our schools, which will help keep and attract local students, great teachers and strong leaders. Let’s stand together, Freeport, and keep our future in our own hands.
