SCARBOROUGH – On Friday, Oct. 24, the Kiwanis Club of Scarborough gave its first “Hero of the Quarter” award to Douglas Bennett, a Social Studies teacher at Scarborough Middle School.

The primary focus of Kiwanis is to improve the lives of children in our community and the world. The Kiwanis Club of Scarborough plans to recognize exceptional public servants in the town of Scarborough throughout the year.

According to Scarborough Middle School Principal Barbara Hathorn, who nominated Bennett for the award, he is a passionate educator, lifelong learner, and consummate professional.

He has motivated his students, and the entire school community to become involved in community service. Bennett started the popular Red Storm Strikes Out Cancer Club, which educates students, staff, and the community about cancer. Every year, the club raises money for Mary’s Walk. Students, staff, and families walk together to create a powerful presence to fight cancer, support research, and support families whose lives are touched by cancer.

Bennett also coaches the Scarborough High girls soccer team. His enthusiasm, energy, and passion for the sport and dedication to students motivates his players to become great players and good citizens.

Finally, he is an active and involved citizen, inspiring the community by educating and encouraging citizens to get out and vote. Each budget season, Bennett is out in the community educating and encouraging voters to make their voices heard, even if their political views differ from his.

In short, his energy and positive outlook inspire his students, school staff, and the community. This makes him the perfect choice for Scarborough Kiwanis’ Hero of the Quarter Award
