HARMONY — Police are investigating a report that three men invaded a Highland Avenue home Monday night, but fled after the homeowner repeatedly stabbed one of the intruders in the abdomen, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said.

The sheriff’s department responded to a call around 11 p.m. from a homeowner who said that three people had entered his house in an attempt to steal property and assaulted him, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster.

The homeowner, whose name was not released, stabbed one assailant, a 52-year-old man, in the abdomen several times, according to Lancaster. The homeowner said he had been assaulted and said he stabbed the man in self-defense.

The injuries to the homeowner were not life-threatening, said Lancaster.

The names of the alleged home invaders, all of whom fled, are also not being released. Lancaster said the homeowner knew one of them.

Staff at Mayo Regional Hospital reported the stab wound when the man reported for treatment, said Lancaster. That man’s injuries were also not life-threatening, he said.

Police have identified the injured man as a suspect, but he has not been charged and is not in custody. Lancaster would not identify the man.

Police are still trying to locate the other two alleged home invaders.

Lancaster would not say what they might have been looking for in the house or how they got in. He would not say whether they were armed.

“We are still looking through evidence from the scene and trying to get a clearer picture of what transpired at the house,” said Lancaster.

Maine State Police and Harmony Rescue also went to the scene Monday night. The Somerset County District Attorney’s Office is also investigating.
