A man who was involved in a high-speed chase from Lewiston to Portland on Thursday morning was charged with possession of bath salts.

Carlos Alcantara, 33, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, was arrested as he walked on Washington Avenue in Portland shortly after the car he was in crashed on Allen Avenue.

Police were still looking late Thursday night for Ashley Gagne, 24, of Lewiston, who was allegedly at the wheel when Trooper John Davis tried to stop the car for speeding.

The driver led police on the chase that topped 100 mph down the Maine Turnpike on Thursday morning. The car left the highway at the Westbrook exit and crashed a little while later into a sign on Allen Avenue, police said.

The driver and the passenger both ran from the scene.

Detectives with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency plan to question Gagne once she is found, police said.

The car had been rented in Massachusetts.
