Fryeburg’s acting police chief, Joshua Potvin, was selected from a pool of 37 applicants from across the country to be the town’s new chief.

Potvin was made acting chief at the end of April after former chief Philip Weymouth resigned.

Weymouth earlier in the month had been placed on administrative leave by Town Manager Sharon Jackson following a budget committee meeting at which his salary was discussed.

Potvin is a former Cumberland County deputy and sergeant who has been with the Fryeburg Police Department since January 2013. He has been a detective sergeant since October. He will be paid $54,080 annually as chief.

“I am dedicated to promoting a safer environment and raising the quality of life for the citizens of Fryeburg and those visiting our town,” Potvin said in a statement after he was appointed at Thursday’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen.
