WHITEFIELD (AP) — A Whitefield man charged with stealing several batteries from a car dealership made police work overtime to capture him.

Lincoln County sheriff ’s deputies went to 36-year-old Jeffrey Luce’s home on Tuesday to question him after the batteries were located at a Jefferson redemption center. The owner said he purchased the batteries from Luce.

When deputies told Luce he was under arrest he asked if he could go into another room and change out of his pajamas.

He instead escaped from the house through the basement.

Police, with the help of dogs, combed through the dense woods near his house before apprehending Luce. He was charged with escape as well as burglary in connection with the stolen batteries.
