On Saturday, May 3, approximately 257 people came to the Faerie Festival at the Kennebunk Free Library. Children were able to make puppets, butterflies, bracelets and crowns, as well as try their hand at “Pinning the Beard on the Gnome.” Fairy houses made by local children were on display inside the Children’s Room of the library. Smiles were seen on faces young and old.

This phenomenal program could not happen without a lot of help. The team at the Kennebunk Free Library was assisted by the Nifty Knitters group, which helped to prepare the crowns later seen throughout town. Diana, Jackie, Sheila Leanna, Naomi, Adia, Jill, Jessica, Aine, Alison, Saraphina, Trea, Sarah, Satya and Catherine played the part of fairies, helping children with crafts and games, and were instrumental in the day running so smoothly.

The Seacoast Garden Club brightened the garden in the back of the library, in addition to their continued maintenance all season long. Of course, all of this could not have happened without the funds raised at the Friends of the Library book sales, held throughout the year.

We thank all of you for your frequent purchases of our inexpensive books that help to fund library programs year-round.

And we thank the fairies, for showing up in the garden, surprising us all at the end of the day.

Bernie Alie, youth services librarian, Kennebunk Free Library
