PORTLAND (AP) — Maine’s Own Organic Milk is folding after about five years on the market.

The company’s chief executive officer Bill Eldridge says in a statement Friday that the product ”“ better known as MOO Milk ”“ will immediately cease commercial availability. The statement says the milk is produced by 12 Maine organic farms and the company is working to secure long-term contracts for those providers’ milk supply.

Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook processes MOO Milk. The statement says Smiling Hill Milk will remain in production and is unaffected by the closure of MOO Milk.

The Falmouth-based company cites an “aged and obsolete” carton filter that was previously decommissioned by Oakhurst and donated to MOO as a critical problem it could not overcome.
