I am writing on behalf of all pet lovers and will no longer remain silent. I regularly drive by a house in Biddeford where I see a lab-mix dog who is confined to, and left in, a small, outdoor pen all morning, afternoon and most likely evening, and my heart breaks to know that its owners are not giving it much-needed attention and love.

I go by several times throughout the day (and evening) only to see this beautiful animal sitting or standing in or near the same spot; rain or shine.

As a proud pet owner, animal lover and vegan, this situation angers me. I have made several calls to our local animal patrol as well as Animal Protective Services on a state level ”“ and will continue to do so ”“ until I see a vast improvement in the care and treatment of this pet. A runner with a long lead would allow the dog more access to the backyard, and it should be brought indoors when it rains or after an acceptable period of time.

Having a pet is a full-time responsibility and requires daily care and commitment. Those who are no longer able or willing to give the necessary time and attention should know there are options available to provide for the pet above and beyond certain necessities.

I realize that owners are well within the limits of the law in providing basic shelter and food, but that does not constitute good quality of life. As a gesture of good will, I would be happy to offer resources on pet care as well as find new home placement for this dog or any other that is neglected. I’d even be happy to give this particular dog a new home with the two pets that I currently own.

I am among several others who have made similar inquires with the local authorities, which makes me feel extremely grateful. To all animal owners, please take care of your pets; you are their life and they look to you for their care and well-being.
