HARPSWELL

Selectmen agreed to an extension Monday to complete the purchase and sale agreement with Dain Allen to acquire a 0.14 acre lot for public waterfront access.

The extension allows Allen until Jan. 29, 2014, to remove personal property from the lot to be purchased and to get a signed release from Barbara D’Onofrio to meet the contract’s definition of marketable title.

In a special meeting Nov. 5, Harpswell voters approved the purchase of Allen’s lot on Lookout Point Road for $85,000 in a move aimed at enhancing the town’s abutting parcel and preserving waterfront access to residents.

It’s the second such delay for the project, On Dec. 10, selectmen voted to amend the original purchase agreement after a Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment found possible soil contaminants on the property.

A $7,000 Phase 2 assessment was initiated, the cost of which will be carried evenly by the town and Allen, who will reduce the parcel price by $3,500.
